Do it yourself and Thrive!
As small business owners, we all know that spending money on advertising and marketing activities can be seen as a small drop in a large pond and even then not making very big ripples. Last week at our Thrive meeting we were given some real good hints and tips on marketing and we were surprisingly told by Nial Adams of Make Marketing Work, that every business owner or manager needs to understand how marketing really works and preferably do it for themselves!
This set me thinking how true…. Who else understands your business better than you do? You are the best person to sell your business and your brand and the easiest and most cost-effective way of marketing your business is by networking. But marketing encompasses many activities alongside networking and the success of a small business depends on the business owner’s ability to market their products and services effectively. Nial is right, marketing should be about learning ‘the system’ and knowing how to ‘play to your strengths’.
Think of marketing as nourishment for your business, it’s the regular food that gets your business where you want it—and keeps it there, just as you need food throughout the day, every day. Inexperienced businesses wait until they’re starving to start looking for nourishment, this is commonly known as feast or famine, successful companies never stop marketing. Coca-Cola may already be one of the most recognized brands in the world, but every year they spend billions every year on their marketing efforts.
Nothing is more important to the success of your business than marketing and networking, so spread the word, even if you as a business owner employs someone to do this for you, every business owner or manager needs to understand how this really works. Healthy promotion of you and your business leads to sales, which is essential for your business to thrive, by keeping your networking and marketing activities strong, means thriving, year after year.
